Guide to Classroom Instruction for Adjunct Faculty

There is more to being a good instructor than having students, books and a room!

The first edition of the Guide, 52 pages in full color, commissioned by The American Chemical Society (ACS) and written by Dr. Reed, was oriented toward industry subject matter experts who were new to classroom teaching, especially for two-year technical and community colleges. It was reviewed by experienced instructors across many states, business organizations, and institutions before its publication in 2002. It covered such essential areas as:

The Guide served as an instructor survival skills package for classroom-oriented instruction for new instructors in both industry and education. It turned out to be useful to all types of faculty, not just adjuncts, in all levels of post-secondary education and across numerous disciplines. It has been used in several states as a basis for all new instructor training and as a cornerstone to instructor training workshops in a number of institutions.

As a result of its success, Dr. Reed was commissioned by the ACS to incorporate the requests of the two- and four-year post secondary educational community for more and expanded information on evaluation, teaching techniques, the use of technology, as well as additional case studies. The expanded second edition was published in January, 2006 and includes a list of publications instructors can use to develop more in-depth information on the various topics covered.
